We got in touch with Leigh Jones, founder of Jones Civil Group, to talk about how his company is helping lay the groundwork for a growing regional Victoria, and how his Hino truck is helping drive his business success.
From pipes to a pipedream
Leigh had 17 years under his belt as a successful plumber, but always had dreams of bigger and better things. Being away for work all the time when he was about to have his second child meant something had to give.
It was a small job that changed everything for Leigh. He tells us, “Starting Jones Civil Group was a bit of a dream for us. We dove into the deep end when a friend asked us to quote on a small job.” This small job ended up turning into a much a bigger one and before Leigh knew it, the business was truly up and running.
Jones Civil Group offers construction, facilities and asset maintenance, earthworks and all aspects of civil construction to the Victorian region, specialising predominately in asset/utilities, defense and government projects.
Leigh’s passion for building a business that focused on collaboration to deliver projects has proven successful, with Jones Civil Group now growing at a pace. Leigh explains, “A lot of this is due to our amazing clients, employees, subcontractors & suppliers all being on the same page as us.”
How the Hino 500 Series Beavertail fit the brief
Leigh tells us that the need for a new truck arose when it was decided that Jones Civil Group would benefit from streamlining operations. When it comes to subcontractors, paying them for cartage can cost a bomb, let alone accounting for delays that inevitably happen when relying on others. “We try to do all our work in-house, so we thought, ‘why don’t we do our own transport too?’.”
When we asked Leigh what he was looking for in a truck, he told us he wanted one with the lot. He was looking for something big and powerful, quick and agile, comfortable and safe, with all the cutting-edge technology to keep his drivers safe. Above all, Leigh says reliability was a must-have for his new truck. We wanted to be able to get from A to B safely and with a truck that can handle the Victorian roads, as some of our projects are remote.”

Looking forward
While Leigh is more than happy with the way his truck has helped Jones Civil Group grow, there is always room for another Hino. He grins, “I have lots of things on my wish list, but a new Hino tipper would not go amiss.”
